Guidance on how to prepare yourself for an adventure
All Much Better Adventures trips are designed as active adventures, taking place in guided small groups within a diverse range of environments and on a varying scale of difficulty.
Each trip requires some form of preparation beforehand, whether that’s:
- Physical preparation and fitness training
- Learning or practising skills needed for the adventure
- Making sure you arrive with the right kit and equipment required
To help prepare for an active adventure we’ve compiled this checklist:
- Group Travel Mindset: A starting point when prepping for any Much Better Adventures trip is to embrace our brand values, understand our model of working with expert local hosts in each destination, and be excited at the prospect of travelling with other people in a small group.
- Research: Read and understand all of the trip page information and any linked sources of additional information. Pay particular attention to the difficulty description, weather seasonality, kit list and any potential environmental risk factors.
- Is this trip right for you?: Ask yourself this question before booking, considering your experience, fitness, health and understanding of what the experience is likely to entail. There may be an alternative MBA trip that is better suited, or that will help prepare you for incrementally bigger challenges. Talk to our Customer Experience team!
- Questions: Reach out with questions if something isn’t clear. If you’ve already booked then simply ask your host, the local experts, who can provide further insight and advice. You can directly message your host at any time via your booking page.
- Medical Advice: Consult early on with your doctor if you have concerns or existing health conditions that could impact your ability to enjoy a trip safely. The NHS Fit for Travel website and also Travel Health Pro are both useful pre-travel resources.
- Sharing Info: Help your host to prepare by submitting all of your personal information accurately and in good time prior to a trip. This includes health conditions and experience - on our Challenging and Tough graded trips you can expect to be prompted to answer experience-based questions on the passenger info form.
- Pre-acclimatisation: Consider whether arriving earlier than Day 1 of your trip would be beneficial for you - everyone’s circumstances are different. For trips starting in hot climates and high altitudes, or requiring long-distance travel to the destination, we advise arriving earlier to give your body as much time as possible to adjust.
- Insurance: Make sure that your travel insurance comprehensively covers all of the activities, environments (e.g. altitudes reached) and destinations featured on your trip.
- Practicalities: The best way to prepare is to mimic the activities you'll be doing on your trip, ideally in a similar environment if possible. For hiking adventures, try to get out walking in the hills and build up your endurance. For other activities, focus on relevant training that will help you feel confident and ready for your adventure.
- Extra Reading: In addition to the trip page for your adventure and information sourced from your local host, we’ve also got lots of useful articles in the Packing & Prep section of our Magazine.
