Update 12 September 2025
Today, Nepal appointed its first female Prime Minister, former Supreme Court Chief Justice Sushila Karki. This represents an important development in Nepal's governance and is hoped to address the concerns of recent protests.
In the words of Himal Pandit, General Manager of Freedom Adventures (our Nepal host):
"This historic appointment decisively addresses any prior uncertainties regarding travel to Nepal and unequivocally allays all security concerns. We, the Freedom Adventures family, are thus delighted to declare Nepal open and safe for travel."
Update 11 September 2025
A brief update from our host in Nepal, Freedom Adventures:
"Civil unrest has ended here in Nepal, and things are getting back to normal slowly as the Nepal Army has taken over to stabilize things. Tribhuvan International Airport has reopened and fully functioning from today. We are ready to welcome MBA customers to Nepal."
Update 10 September 2025
In the past week events in Nepal have been in the news, with anti-government protests taking place across Kathmandu and other locations, resulting in the Nepalese Army being used to secure key locations to protect essential infrastructure including the airport. Thamel, the district of the city where the tourist hotels are located, has not been a focus of the protests and the accommodations used for our Nepal trips remain open, safe and secure. Beyond the capital, all of the trekking routes have remained open and have not been impacted.
As of 15:30 local time today, Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu has been reopened by the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal, allowing international and domestic flights to resume. Please contact your airline to reconfirm your flights if you are travelling in the next few days. There may be some flight disruption while airlines update their schedules and the backlog of delayed passengers is cleared. If your arrival flight is affected, you must contact your local host via your booking about this change.
All trips in Nepal are continuing to run as scheduled and the normal terms and conditions still apply to your booking. The safety and security of our customers and our local host team are of utmost importance and our highest priority. Travellers currently in Nepal are advised to avoid areas with demonstrations. We remain in close contact with our local host in Nepal, who are ready to provide assistance to MBA customers who are travelling in the coming days and weeks.
What is the Official Travel Advice?
Much Better Adventures refers to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers are familiar with the practical information provided on the UK Government’s FCDO website, where the current travel advice can be found.
We receive real-time safety updates and travel advice for Nepal from the UK FCDO. In addition, our local host is based in Kathmandu and provides us with regular updates. Your safety is our highest priority so in the event that the UK Government Travel Advice changes whilst your trip is in progress, then measures will be taken to comply with that advice. Your local host and their team of guides are able to support travellers on the ground and have contingency plans for their trips. We also work with an expert security and incident management partner who is available 24/7 to offer additional support, if required.
