Updated: 17 July 2025

What’s happening?

A volcanic eruption began on the Reykjanes Peninsula, southwest Iceland, and has intensified in recent days. This is part of an ongoing volcanic episode in the region which has seen several eruptions since 2021.

The Icelandic authorities are well-prepared for such events and have robust monitoring and emergency response systems in place. The area immediately around the eruption site has been evacuated and is closed to the public.

The eruption is localised, and most of Iceland — including key travel routes, accommodation, and adventure areas — remains unaffected. Iceland remains open for travel.

Are Much Better Adventures trips affected?

Currently, our trips to Iceland are continuing as planned. Our local teams are keeping a close eye on the situation and remain in contact with Icelandic authorities.

One of our trips — Trek the Laugavegur Trail in Iceland: The Camping Edition — is currently underway (as of 17 July 2025). Our local partner has confirmed the group is safe, well, and far from the eruption area. Here’s what they’ve told us:

“The clients are now on the trekking part and far from the eruption, so no consequences. The situation is really under control, with no changes needed at this point.”

Our Iceland host's have strong contingency plans in place, including emergency transport and alternative accommodation if needed.

If anything changes that would impact your trip, we will contact you directly.

What about flights?

There have been no reported disruptions to flights to or from Iceland at this time. Keflavík International Airport remains open and operational. We recommend checking with your airline for the most up-to-date information.

What’s the official advice?

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) is not advising against travel to Iceland. Their official guidance notes the volcanic activity and advises travellers to follow local advice and avoid restricted areas.

You can read their full advice here:

Nb. If you are not a UK citizen, you should monitor the advice of your national government's foreign travel advisory.

What happens if the UK FCDO travel advice changes while my trip is in progress?

We receive real-time safety updates and travel advice for Iceland from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). In addition, our local hosts are based in Iceland and provide us with regular updates from the ground.

Your safety is our top priority. If the UK travel advice changes during your trip, we will take immediate steps to comply with the guidance. Our local hosts are experienced and well-prepared, with contingency plans in place to adapt routes, arrange alternative accommodation, or provide emergency transport if required.

We also work closely with an expert security and incident management partner who is available 24/7 to offer additional support if needed.

Should I be worried?

Volcanic activity in Iceland is relatively common, and the country is well equipped to manage it safely. Our local teams, in partnership with Icelandic authorities, are well-versed in responding to these events and will act quickly if circumstances change.

We’re keeping a close watch and will update all affected customers if needed. For now, there is no need to change or cancel your plans. Normal cancellation conditions apply as per our customer booking T&Cs.
