Safety & Wellbeing on Your Much Better Adventure
At Much Better Adventures and within our community of Host partners, your safety and wellbeing are at the core of every experience we create. Whether you're hiking remote mountain trails, paddling wild rivers, or exploring deserts and jungles, we take measures to ensure you are supported and protected throughout your journey.
On this page you’ll find a collection of important resources and information along with an insight into the safety management system of Much Better Adventures, and how we work with our Host partners to ensure safe and enjoyable adventures.
Travel Advisories
For your quick reference:
- UK Government FCDO - Foreign Travel Advice https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice
- US Department of State Travel Advisories https://travel.state.gov/en/international-travel/travel-advisories.html
- Canada Travel Advisories https://travel.gc.ca/travelling/advisories
Our operations team keeps track of the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advice in real time. We only run trips in destinations the FCDO considers safe for leisure travel, and never where it advises against all or ‘all but essential travel’.
Travel Alerts
We use FCDO advice, plus information updates from our local hosts, to review whether any events could potentially affect your adventure. If there is something to make you aware of, then we’ll share clear, timely communications with you. Live destination travel alerts, typically for any ongoing situations, are listed in the Travel Advice section with our Customer Help Articles.

24/7 Host Emergency Support
Behind every adventure are our trusted local Hosts. They’re the people looking after you day to day, backed up by our dedicated safety team and operations staff who help them plan, monitor and respond to anything that could affect your trip from the moment it’s designed until you’re safely home.
- Your local Host and their expert guiding staff are on hand 24/7 throughout your trip to support you through any incident or unexpected event. Your Host will provide you with a local emergency telephone number for their organisation, plus the phone number of your guide.
- The Much Better Adventures team in the UK are also available during working hours (How to Contact us) should you need to contact us.
- We partner with Pharos Response - one of the UK’s leading crisis and incident management consultancies. Pharos provide expert 24/7 support to Hosts in the event of any serious incident, helping our Hosts and team respond swiftly and professionally when it matters most.
- If an emergency situation arises during your trip, your Host will move you to safety, activate emergency protocols, ensure access to medical or consular support, and help you contact airlines, insurers, or next of kin. Much Better Adventures will also stay closely involved, providing practical guidance and direct customer support to help you manage the situation.
Our Safety System and Minimum Standards
We’ve built our safety system around clear Minimum Safety Standards for our Hosts to adhere to, based on recognised international best practice in adventure travel.
- Every local host contractually agrees to meet these standards before running a trip.
- They cover essentials like qualified guides, first aid readiness, emergency plans, safe accommodation and transport, and fair treatment of local staff.
- We check compliance through a thorough vetting process before any trip goes live on the MBA platform.
- All trips are run in line with the UK Package Travel Regulations, which set the legal framework for your protection.
- Much Better Adventures is also a member of ABTA, meaning we follow ABTA’s Code of Conduct and can provide access to their independent complaints resolution service if ever needed.
Before You Travel - what we do
- Trip design & refinement: Each adventure is thoughtfully curated and regularly refined in collaboration with our hosts to ensure a safe, seamless and outstanding experience.
- Personal information: Your dietary and medical information, including allergies and support needs are shared securely with your host to enable them to prepare and support your safe participation. You will have the chance to discuss pre-existing conditions with your host to make sure any reasonable adjustments can be made and an appropriate action plan can be implemented.
- Trip Preparation: Advice and links to useful reading resources are shared pre-travel, covering physical preparation, kit lists, and highlighting any destination risks - helping you get ready for your adventure. We make it easy for you to ask questions directly to your Host, from within your booking page, or you can get in touch with the MBA team.
On Your Trip - our safety measures
- Emergency Preparedness: Your Host has a clear emergency plan in place for every trip. If needed, your guide will brief you on what to do and how to get help.
- Qualified Guides & Emergency Equipment: Every trip is led by appropriately experienced guides who are trained in first aid and equipped with a suitable first aid kit. They also carry reliable means of emergency communication (such as satellite devices, radios, or mobiles depending on location), so that help can be summoned quickly if required.
- Incident Response: Our 24/7 specialist crisis and incident management partners are on call if a serious incident occurs. Hosts follow a clear protocol on reporting incidents to us. We review all incidents and near misses to keep improving safety.
- Adapting to conditions: Guides can adjust or stop activities if situations change, always putting your safety first.
Your Role in Staying Safe
We’ll do everything we can to keep you safe, but there are a few simple steps you can take too:
- Read and respect our community values: Be mindful of your impact on the group and your hosts. Guides and local hosts may remove anyone who puts themselves or others at risk.
- Get travel insurance: Required for all trips. Your policy must cover medical treatment, evacuation/repatriation, and the specific activities on your adventure. Tell your insurer about any pre-existing medical conditions.
- Choose the right trip for you: Read the trip page carefully and check the difficulty rating to be sure it matches your fitness, comfort level and expectations. Understand any particular risks associated with the environment(s) featured on the trip. If in doubt, contact us!
- Prepare well: Train appropriately and bring all the kit listed. Read our article on ‘How to Prepare for your Trip’.
- Check official advisories: If travelling from somewhere other than the UK, then make sure that you have checked the relevant travel advisories applicable to your country of residence.
- Check travel health advice: Using the resources linked above.
- Share accurate information: Provide clear and up-to-date dietary and medical details as early as possible, so your host can support you properly.
Always Improving
Our safety standards are based on recognised best practice in global adventure travel, and we review and improve them all the time.
Adventure always carries a little of the unknown – that’s what makes it exciting. But with trusted local hosts, verified safety plans, 24/7 backup, and expert crisis support, you can be confident we’ve thought through the details so you can focus on the experience, not the risk.
