Sri Lanka - Travel Advice for MBA Customers (Feb 2026)
Information on the current situation in Sri Lanka following Cyclone Ditwah.
Last Updated: 13 February 2026
Current situation in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka was affected by Cyclone Ditwah on 28–29 November 2025, bringing heavy rainfall, flooding and landslides to some parts of the country, which resulted in extensive damage and loss of life. The central highlands (around Kandy and Nuwara Eliya) were particularly affected.
Clean-up and repair work progressed quickly, and tourist infrastructure and sites are open and operating normally, with the exception of train operations between Kandy and Nuwara Eliya, which remain suspended. Local authorities expect repairs to this section of railway line to take several months, and services may not resume until late 2026 or beyond. However, the section of railway between Nuwara Eliya and Ella (one of the most scenic) is already operational.
Are MBA trips in Sri Lanka still running?
Yes. All Much Better Adventures trips in Sri Lanka are operating.
Our experienced local host has continued to safely operate trips in Sri Lanka since the cyclone.
Will there be any itinerary adjustments?
All Sri Lanka itineraries are running as originally planned, except for the suspended train operations between Kandy and Nuwara Eliya.
The following trip does not include the train journey and is therefore running as normal, with no itinerary adjustments:
The following trips have minor itinerary adjustments (until further notice) in place of the suspended train journey:
Itinerary adjustments:
On Day 7, you’ll travel to Nuwara Eliya by private vehicle instead of by train.
On Day 9, to keep a train experience in your itinerary, after hiking the Pekoe Trail, you’ll take a two-hour scenic rail journey to Ella (usually starting from Idalgasinna station, but timetables may be subject to change), then continue to Talalla by road.
Itinerary adjustments:
On Day 5, you’ll travel from Kandy to Ambewela via Nuwara Eliya by private vehicle (3-4 hours) instead of by train. Then, from Ambewela to Ella, you will take the train (this is the most scenic portion of the route).
What is the Official Travel Advice?
Much Better Adventures follows the travel advice issued by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).
Following Cyclone Ditwah, the FCDO’s overall travel advice for Sri Lanka has not changed. While the FCDO advises normal caution in areas affected by recent heavy rainfall, travel to Sri Lanka is not advised against.
A national state of emergency remains in place. The Sri Lankan Tourist Board has confirmed that this is administrative, allowing authorities to coordinate disaster response efforts, and does not restrict tourist travel or movement.
We recommend that all travellers familiarise themselves with the latest official guidance:

For customers travelling from outside the UK, please also check the official travel advice issued by your country of residence, as this may differ.
